Welcome to the Mafia
20 02 2007Last night the Brazilian gal (Priscilla) at our hotel invited us to go out with her and her boyfriend (Joaquim). We got downtown at about midnight and left at about 3:30. We happened to run into her father who had been partying in the VIP party, and managed to scam 4 wristbands for us. So we went, and got to rub elbows with the Mayor of Recife, and drink (beer or Johnny Walker!) and eat (hors-d’oeuvres and delicious crab soup) for free all night. The slang Portuguese term for this is boca livre, meaning free mouth.
Lucky us - we feel very privileged - first of all that the cool Brazilians wanted to hang out with us, secondly that they initiated us into the Mafia. Kind of weird though being indoors in the A/C watching big screen TVs displaying what was happening outside only 100 yards away. We even watched the fireworks through the window. I guess that’s what VIP means in Brazil.
When we left the party we drove to Laça Burguer - a fast-food style burger (and other sandwiches) place in Boa Viagem where the manager wears a suit and tie (even at 4 AM).
